At Bursa Technical University, students who have been admitted to programs requiring 30% or 100% English instruction must successfully complete the English Preparatory Class at the School of Foreign Languages if they fail the English Proficiency Exam (BTÜYDS) or do not achieve an equivalent score on TOEFL, YDS, or YÖKDİL. Additionally, students who are eligible to take the optional English Preparatory Class for their programs may choose to study English at the School of Foreign Languages for one year.
The School of Foreign Languages implements a modular training program to increase the effectiveness of the English Preparatory Class. In this context, students complete the English Preparatory Class at the end of four quarters, each lasting at least 8 weeks. During the last week of each quarter, evaluation activities are carried out, and preparations are made for the next quarter. The number of class weeks within the quarters may vary throughout the year according to the academic calendar.
As of the 2022-2023 academic year, the School of Foreign Languages has adopted a blended learning model, combining online support with face-to-face instruction. The English Preparatory Class education includes four different levels of instruction. For undergraduate programs like English Translation and Interpreting, which are focused on a specific foreign language, the preparatory class levels are B1+, B2, B2+, and C1, with a total of 21 hours of face-to-face classes per week. For other compulsory or optional English preparatory classes in undergraduate programs, the levels are A2, B1, B1+, and B2, also with 21 hours of face-to-face classes per week. In the case of students repeating a level (rA2, rB1, rB1+ levels), a total of 19 hours of face-to-face classes per week are organized. In addition to face-to-face classes, all levels are supported with supplementary content on our online learning platform, LEARN.
Different types of modules are designed according to student needs, which are identified through regular assessments that measure all language skills. Therefore, for students who are struggling, supportive modules are offered to help them improve the skills in which they are lagging at their respective levels.
Our school uses various types of exams and assignments to comprehensively assess students' English proficiency. This assessment system focuses on measuring students' ability to apply their language skills in real-life situations.
